Islam is a monotheistic religion based on the revelation received by the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century. The word "Islam" means "submission to God" in Arabic. Followers of Islam, called Muslims, believe in one God (Allah) and follow the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah (traditions of the Prophet).
Islam rests on five fundamental pillars: the declaration of faith (Shahada), prayer (Salat) performed five times a day, obligatory charity (Zakat), fasting during the month of Ramadan (Sawm), and the pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj) for those who are physically and financially able.
To become Muslim, one simply pronounces the declaration of faith (Shahada) sincerely: "I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad is His messenger." This declaration, made with conviction and understanding, marks entry into Islam.
