Complete Zakat guide

What is Zakat?

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam. It is a religious obligation consisting of giving a portion of one's wealth to those in need. It purifies the wealth and soul of the giver while helping the most disadvantaged.

Who must pay Zakat?

Zakat is obligatory for every Muslim whose wealth reaches the Nissab threshold (taxable minimum) and who has held it for a full lunar year (Hawl).

How is Zakat calculated?

Zakat is calculated at 2.5% of taxable assets exceeding the Nissab. Taxable assets include:

  • Gold and silver (jewelry, bars)
  • Cash and bank accounts
  • Stocks and investments
  • Commercial inventory
  • Receivables you expect to recover

To whom should you give your Zakat?

Zakat must be distributed to the eight categories of beneficiaries mentioned in the Quran (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:60):

  1. The poor (Al-Fuqara)
  2. The needy (Al-Masakin)
  3. Zakat collectors (Al-'Amilina 'Alayha)
  4. Those whose hearts are to be reconciled (Al-Mu'allafati Qulubuhum)
  5. To free slaves (Fi Ar-Riqab)
  6. The indebted (Al-Gharimin)
  7. For the cause of Allah (Fi Sabilillah)
  8. Travelers (Ibn As-Sabil)
