Prayer at the mosque
Congregational prayer holds a special place in Islam. Discover its merits, the etiquette to observe, and our tips if it is your first visit.
The merits of congregational prayer
A multiplied reward
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Prayer in congregation surpasses individual prayer by twenty-seven degrees" (Bukhari and Muslim). Every step toward the mosque raises one degree and erases a sin.
The community bond
The mosque is the heart of the community: you meet your brothers and sisters, learn your religion and find support, especially important for new converts.
Friday prayer (Jumu'a)
Friday congregational prayer is obligatory for pubescent resident men. It replaces Dhuhr and includes a sermon (khutba) followed by two rakat.
Mosque etiquette (adab)
- Perform ablutions before leaving, preferably at home
- Wear clean and modest clothing
- Enter with the right foot while reciting the entry supplication
- Pray two rakat of greeting the mosque before sitting
- Turn off or silence your phone
- Do not pass in front of a person praying
- Speak quietly and respect those praying
