Converting to Islam is a process that is both simple in form and profound in meaning. Contrary to a widespread idea, no complicated ceremony is required.
The essential step: the Shahada
Becoming a Muslim comes down to pronouncing, sincerely and understanding their meaning, the words of the testimony of faith (the Shahada):
“Ash-hadu an lâ ilâha illâ Allah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasûlu Allah”
“I testify that there is no deity but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His messenger.”
It is recommended to pronounce it before witnesses (for example in a mosque), but this is not a strict obligation: it is the intention of the heart that counts.
What changes in daily life
After conversion, one gradually learns:
- to perform the five daily prayers;
- to read and understand the Quran;
- the rules of food (halal);
- fasting during Ramadan.
No one expects immediate perfection from you. Islam values progression in stages.
Our advice to get started well
- Learn at your own pace. Start with the basics (prayer, the Fatiha).
- Surround yourself. Get closer to a caring community.
- Ask questions. No question is silly when you are learning.
- Be patient and gentle with yourself.
